The Power of Technology
Community Preservation and Development Corporation (CPDC) strongly believes in technological advancement and the vital role it plays in sustaining vibrant communities. Our properties, our programs, and our communities are all built on the power of technology. In order to participate in today's connected society, people need access to tools-computers, software, the Internet, and email-and the training to utilize those tools to their best advantage. In 1995, CPDC created the first electronic village, EdgeNet, in an affordable housing community.
The technology created through CPDC's EdgeNet network is designed to be a catalyst-a tool that works both on an individual level and a community level.
Clearly, empowered residents can effect change. They effect change in their communities and change in their personal and professional lives. CPDC 's long-term goal in its partnership with residents is to provide them with opportunities to empower themselves and to engender deeper personal engagement within the community.
This goal is often accomplished through program initiatives based on state-of-the-art technology:
- CPDC's housing gives our residents in-home access to the Internet. The right mix of partnerships provides hardware, software, and the training necessary to fully utilize this invaluable tool. High-speed Internet access in every home facilitates techno-advocacy. Information presented online can help to define an issue and key players and target an effective plan of action for self-advocacy.
- Residents work with Community Empowerment (CE) staff to develop curricula for classes. Residents then teach each other, creating an environment where neighbors learn from, and rely upon, one another for support.
- CE leadership trainings helps residents incorporate as resident associations, creating a means to legally represent themselves to management, owners, and local government and instill a focus on problem solving.
- Resident groups drive the use of technology in their communities, including forming their own 501(c)(3) organization, such as with Edgewood Terrace, Park Montgomery, and Stewartown Homes.
