Position Description
Location: CPDC @ Park Montgomery, 8860 Piney Branch Road (Level 1), Silver Spring, MD 20903
Supervisor: Seble Seyoum, Resident Services Manager, (301) 439-9150
Hours: 1 hour and 30 minutes once a week (weekdays or weekends)
Purpose: The Fitness Instructor will develop and lead a weekly fitness class that includes safe and relevant fitness activities/exercises that promote health and wellness and reinforce attendance and participation in the Park Montgomery fitness program.
Description: The Fitness Instructor’s responsibilities may include:
- Helping class participants assess their physical fitness level and set realistic fitness goals
- Preparing a class lesson plan, choosing appropriate music and tailoring fitness activities to needs and abilities of class members
- Providing instruction and demonstrating each physical activity
- Monitoring form and assisting people who need help to reinforcing proper exercise form; providing exercise modifications as necessary
- Providing ongoing education on exercise safety
- Taking all appropriate and necessary precautions to ensure safety of participants
- Orienting and assessing new class members to meet objectives outlined above
- Taking attendance for each class
- Providing encouragement and support to motivate class participants to achieve realistic goals
- Educating participants about specific nutrition, weight control and other healthy lifestyle and wellness practices by providing oral and written information and identifying resources for additional information
- Implementing Emergency Action Plan as outlined in the event of an injury, illness or other emergency
- Informing Resident Services Manager of problems or concerns about participants, equipment, exercise space, etc.
- Submitting record of service hours to the Resident Services Manager at the end of each month
Qualifications: Volunteer must have current accredited Group Exercise Instructor certification through ACE, AFFA, or ACSM that includes current First Aid/CPR certification. Other necessary qualities and skills include:
- Enjoyment and experience working with youth and adults
- Teaching ability – experience with group exercise instruction preferred
- Current knowledge of exercise protocol as well as contra-indicated moves and exercises
- Respect for self and others
- Good role model for a healthy lifestyle
- Tolerance and openness to different world views and sensitivity to other cultures and languages
- Enthusiastic, energetic, friendly and positive
- Ability to take initiative and problem-solve appropriately and professionally
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Written commitment to act in ways that are consistent with CPDC policies, rules and other expectations
Training and Support: CPDC will provide volunteer member orientation and a Volunteer Member Handbook. The supervisor will provide ongoing supervision and be available for consultation.
