Position Description
Location: CPDC @ Southern Ridge Community Center, 1212 Southern Avenue, SE, Washington DC 20032
Supervisor: Cora Clark-Miles, Resident Services Manager, (202) 562-1920
Hours: Monday – Thursday (3:00PM – 6:00PM)
Purpose: The After School Teen Aide will provide assistance with the daily activities for the After-School Program for youth in grades 1-6. Teen assistants will provide homework assistance in reading and math, lead enrichment activities and assist students with project based learning activities.
Description: The After School Teen Aide’s responsibilities may include:
- Providing homework help for youth
- Reading to students
- Keeping youth engaged and focused on learning activities
- Assisting students with research
- Helping to create bulletin boards and other community space displays of students’ work
- Modeling and enforcing the site program rules consistently and fairly
- Working with small groups of students to guide learning activities
- Informing program staff of problems or concerns about children’s learning, attitude and behavior
- Completing and submitting a record of service hours to the Resident Services Manager at the end of each month
Qualifications: Volunteer member must be at least 16 years of age and enjoy working with children and/or youth. Other necessary qualities and skills include:
- Patience and ability to measure progress in small steps
- Good written and verbal communication ability
- Willingness to learn, to accept supervision and follow direction
- Written commitment to maintain confidentiality and act in ways that are consistent with CPDC policies, rules and other expectations
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Positive attitude
- Respect for self and others
- Dependability in reporting to work on time and fulfilling responsibilities
Training and Support: CPDC will provide volunteer member orientation and a Volunteer Member Handbook. The supervisor will provide ongoing supervision and be available for consultation.
