Position Description
Location: Community Preservation and Development Corporation (CPDC) @5513 Connecticut Avenue, NW # 250, Washington, DC 20015
Supervisor: Harry Thompson, Chief Financial Officer, 202-885-9555
Hours: Fall Semester 2013: September – December, for 10-12 weeks and 15-20 hrs per week
Purpose: The intern will support the Finance Project Assistant in CPDC’s effort to digitize and catalog its paper records, and load them into the SharePoint document management system making them more readily accessible and usable by the enterprise. The intern will learn the various types of financial, legal and other records required to build, develop, operate and account for real estate entities financed with tax credits and/or other subsidized financing. CPDC believes a person with interests in real estate, urban planning, accounting or finance will benefit from this opportunity.
Responsibilities may include:
- Learn structure of CPDC SharePoint system and CPDC document retention policies
- Review and categorize hard copy financial and legal files based on document retention guidelines and as determined through conversations with staff supervisor
- Review, categorize and save the electronic financial and legal files per SharePoint system filing and naming protocols, CPDC document retention policies and conversations with staff supervisor
- Identify and flag those financial and legal documents that do not fit within the current retention policies for further review to determine appropriate categorization and filing.
- Document conversations and decisions that result from staff supervisor and team conversations that augment the filing and naming protocols for similar documents and folders in the future
- Place documents that are deemed appropriate for disposal in locked disposal container
- Provide ongoing feedback on process and protocols to staff supervisor and make recommendations to enhance the process and clarify protocols
Qualifications: necessary qualities and skills include
- Education and/or experience in business, real estate, IT or related field
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work in a team environment using good interpersonal skills and to work independently making decisions without an established framework
- Ability to apply processes and protocols
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
Training and Support: Orientation to CPDC and its communities. Development of initial work plan and timeline with supervisor related to above tasks. Weekly meetings to review, plan, and provide coaching around various aspects of the internship experience. Participate in staff meetings, external meetings, and trainings as available and relevant to the scope of the position. Participate in an intern program feedback process and exit interview.
