Position Description
Location: CPDC @ Island Walk, 1701 Torrey Pines Court, Reston, VA
Supervisor: Amanda House, Resident Services Site Manager, 703-471-1088
Hours: Once per week (Monday-Thursday) for at least one hour for the period of
September 9, 2013 – May 29, 2014 (not including holiday breaks)
Shifts available: 3:45 PM- 4:45 PM or 5:00 PM- 6:00 PM
Purpose: The After School Program Aide will provide homework help and assist with learning activities that engage students, grades 1-6, in ways that foster a love for learning and reinforce attendance and participation.
Responsibilities may include:
- Provide homework help for children grades 1-6
- Reinforce academic and social skills
- Read to students
- Work with small groups of students to guide project-based learning activities
- Model and enforce the site program rules consistently and fairly
- Inform program staff of problems or concerns about children’s learning, attitude and behavior
- Complete and submit a record of service hours to staff supervisor at the end of each month
Qualifications: Volunteer member must be at least 18 years of age and enjoy working with children and/or youth. Other necessary qualities and skills include
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Good role model for children and youth
- Tolerance and openness to different world views and sensitivity to other cultures and languages
- Ability to work independently or as a team
- Dependability in reporting to serve and fulfill responsibilities of position
- Willingness to learn, to accept supervision and direction
- Written commitment to act in ways that are consistent with CPDC policies, rules and other expectations
- Knowledge of positive classroom management strategies is a plus
Training and Support: CPDC will provide volunteer member orientation and a Volunteer Member Handbook. The staff supervisor will provide ongoing supervision and be available for consultation. Volunteer member will also participate in staff meetings and training’s, when appropriate.
