The Gateway's mission is to provide
access to and instruction in current computer technology in order to foster
community growth and increase employment prospects for residents of CPDC
communities.
We believe that computer skills are becoming a
prerequisite for getting a job in today's economy. As more jobs require
computer skills, low-income families are increasingly disadvantaged; they
can't afford to purchase computers, they lack access to current computer
technology, and affordable training programs are not available.
Located on the grounds of CPDC's low- and moderate-income
housing developments, Gateway centers provide residents with access to
computers and training programs.
Each Gateway center features several networked
computer workstations with current software, reference materials, edutainment
titles, and an Internet connection. Three centers are already up and running
with three more expected to come on-line by the end of the year. Each Gateway
Center also offers a variety of training options tailored to the specific
needs of its particular community, ranging from basic computer literacy
classes to more advanced application-specific instruction and job
training programs.
Available during open lab time, CPDC's Gateway
Centers build community by encouraging individual involvement and enhancing
group participation as residents use the center to meet, share ideas, do
homework, create newsletters and flyers, prepare resumes, and browse the
Internet's World Wide Web.
