CPDC began operating a community
computer center at Edgewood Terrace in June of 1995. Since that time, CPDC
has been teaching introductory and intermediate level computer courses
for adults, kids and seniors.
The Gateway results speak for themselves. In the
past two years, approximately 31 residents have participated in the Computer
and Office Skills Employment Program - 1/3 now have jobs. Since March of
1997, we have trained 208 residents in the basic use of a computer, and
provided an on-going after-school program for the children of Edgewood
Terrace.
CPDC and The Gateway do not believe in re-inventing
the wheel. Wherever possible, The Gateway partners with experts in
a particular field to augment its programs. Two notable partners
are Catholic University of America’s Metropolitan College, which offers
a Business English-Skills workshop for the Computer Office Skills Employment
Program, and the Anacostia Museum, a branch of the Smithsonian Institute
dedicated to African-American History and the concepts of “the community
museum.”
