D.C. Public Housing Unit Rises Again After Violent History
The Overlook, once known as Parkside Terrace, operated as a public housing apartment complex laden with criminal and drug activities until its 180 degree transformation in 2009. Now, the Overlook is recognized as one of the notable restorations in affordable housing in Ward 8, after city officials and developers spent $73 million to create a building that “signals the rebirth of a neighborhood that was neglected before,” says former D.C. Council member H.R. Crawford. Residents of the Overlook can now enjoy 3 acres of green space, community and computer rooms, along with a playground area.
