CPDC Participates in National ‘Lights on Afterschool’ Campaign
On October 20, CPDC residents and staff at the Reston, VA Island Walk community celebrated and raised awareness of the importance of afterschool programs for working families.
From Southeast Washington, D.C., to Annapolis, MD, to Alexandria and Reston, VA many of CPDC’s nearly 30 affordable housing communities offer onsite youth afterschool programs as a service to residents.
In America today, 11.3 million children are alone and unsupervised after school. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. They provide opportunities to help young people develop into successful adults.
Launched in October 2000 by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their role in keeping kids safe, inspiring them to learn and helping working families. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and annually sees more than 1 million Americans celebrate at more than 8,000 events nationwide.
