CPDC Host 2nd Annual “Great Grocery Give” to Support Wiley H. Bates Produce Program
By Cate Sirko, Resident Services Manager
For the second year, CPDC will participate in Anne Arundel County’s Great Give, a 24-hour, online fundraising event created to rally the community in support of more than 100 local nonprofits representing various causes. This unique fundraiser is organized by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County and will be held from 6pm on May 7, 2014 to 6pm on May 8, 2014.
The funds raised in 2013 from CPDC’s “Great Grocery Give” provided much-needed fresh produce for the older adults at the Wiley H. Bates Residences. The Bates Produce Program— an ongoing initiative in alignment with CPDC’s Health and Wellness impact area— currently provides an average of 35 Bates residents with free produce each week through partnership with a local food bank. In previous years, produce had only been made available from April through November, leaving many residents without access to fresh foods during the winter months. The 2013 “Great Grocery Give” raised enough funds to provide 40 boxes of fresh produce delivered from Washington’s Green Grocer directly to Bates residents twice a month for the entire winter.
“The Great Give is truly a great gift,” said Bates resident Susan Thomas. “The program is truly appreciated.”
This year, Bates residents have taken the lead in organizing a community-based fundraiser to support the produce program. As such, the residents would like to extend an invitation to attend their Open House.
WILEY H. BATES OPEN HOUSE: Wednesday, May 7, 2014, 5pm – 8pm, 1029 Smithville Street, Maryland, Annapolis, MD 21401
Friends and family of residents, as well as community partners and other guests, will be invited to tour the Wiley H. Bates Heritage Park, enjoy delicious food, listen to performances by local musical groups, and get to know residents and members of the broader community.
