Green Landscaping Pro Bono Consultant
|
Purpose: Create plan for community residential landscaping that minimizes harm to the environment, saves time and money in maintenance and fosters healthier living places for residents living in urban and suburban CPDC communities.
Location: CPDC communities in the District of Columbia, and/or Fairfax, Montgomery, Anne
Arundel and Harford Counties. Work on the green landscaping plan and recommendations for short and long-term landscaping improvements can be done from the consultant’s home or place of business.
Service Term: June – August 2009 (and beyond, if desired); 10 or more hours/week with flexibility for vacation and other commitments |
Description: The Green Landscaping Consultant’s responsibilities may include:
· Assess the landscaping in CPDC communities to determine current conditions, plant and soil types, drainage, etc. as well as the intended benefits/use of the landscaping (e.g. screening, shade)
· Develop a plan to foster green landscaping in CPDC communities. The plan needs to include recommendations for natural landscapes; native plant species; removal of invasives; reduction of energy needs; reduction of air and noise pollution; integrated pest management; flooding and erosion reduction; habitat for wildlife, etc.
· Prioritize the recommendations in terms of importance, taking into account their practicality given the property and the property budget
· Alternatively, the consultant might train other volunteers to assess the landscaping in communities in different jurisdictions and coordinate the collection of the assessments and recommendations
· Assist with the creation of a report that summarizes the findings and makes recommendations for green landscaping in all CPDC communities |
Qualifications: See education and experience below. Other necessary qualities include
· Good verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
· Willingness and ability to meet deadlines identified through conversation between consultant and CPDC project supervisor

Experience: · Education or extensive training in environmentally friendly landscaping
· At least five years experience in developing and maintaining green landscaping
The positions gives the consultant an oopportunity to serve and share from his/her own life experience; experience the satisfaction of making a differentce in the health and well being of communities; foster public awareness of environmentally sound landscaping; and receive letters of reference for jobs, awards, etc. upon successful completion of project
