Notre Dame AmeriCorps Community Engagement Coordinator
|
Purpose: CPDC’s Community Empowerment Program is the vehicle through which we assist and support residents in developing and sustaining vibrant communities. The Notre Dame AmeriCorps (NDA) Community Engagement Coordinator will educate and empower resident leaders and associations to advocate for and engage in activities that promote long-term affordability, safety, quality and sustainability of their communities.
Location: Washington, DC
Service Term: September 3, 2009 – July 31, 2010

Description: The NDA Community Engagement Coordinator’s responsibilities may include:
· In collaboration with CPDC’s Manager, Volunteer Membership, and other Community Engagement Coordinators, develop and implement a resident leadership training curriculum that teaches residents about
(1) community features – assets, challenges, resources, potential leaders;
(2) personal leadership skill development (by identifying the skills they have and
focusing on those that need enhancing);
(3) community project organization and implementation (by identifying and engaging in the process of coordinating and completing a community project); and
(4) group dynamics, effective communication, conflict resolution and group facilitation strategies
· Educate residents about the purpose, benefits, roles, responsibilities and tasks involved in developing a resident association
· Assist residents in developing articles of incorporation, bylaws, and fulfilling the requirements of becoming a legal entity which is recognized by the District government or developing whatever policies and procedures are required for effective functioning and capacity building as a non-legal entity
· Develop and implement instructional plan and resources to educate community members about personal and community safety
· Assist resident association in creating and implementing a strategic community action plan to strengthen and sustain community safety and security for all residents
· Organize and facilitate monthly trainings that give all CPDC resident association leaders an opportunity to meet leaders from other neighborhood communities and learn from and support each other
· Facilitate group learning activities (forums, workshops, etc.) that educate residents about civic processes and empower them to connect their specific housing needs with advocacy at the neighborhood and city-wide levels
· Participate in monthly resident association meetings, CPDC all staff and program staff meetings and school and community-related events as appropriate to the position
· Enforce site policies and program rules consistently and fairly
· Communicate observations and concerns regarding residents, resources, etc. with staff supervisor
· Other responsibilities as identified in consultation between member and staff supervisor to facilitate accomplishment of member’s goals |
Qualifications: Necessary qualities and skills include:
· Extensive training and/or experience in adult education and curriculum development
· Personal/professional awareness of challenges and benefits of urban community living
· Excellent interpersonal, communication and group building skills
· Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
· Tolerance and openness to different world views, cultures and languages
· Willingness to learn, to accept supervision and direction
· Ability to problem solve, to see solutions and opportunities as well as obstacles
· Positive attitude and respect for self and others
· Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
· Ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality and abide by CPDC volunteer member policies and procedures

Experience: A high school diploma or GED certificate is required. Education or extensive experience in social work, community organizing, leadership development, or similar field preferred.
